“Here’s my advice…have a little faith, and if that doesn’t work, have a lot of mimosas.” Those are the famous, wise words of fictional, Gossip Girl character- Blair Waldorf. Here at Toasts in Tow, we agree- mimosas can fix almost anything.
This classic, brunch specialty is thought to have first been created in 1925 by a bartender at the Ritz motel in Paris. Almost a century later, that very special drink sparked the idea of the Toasts in Tow Mobile Bar. Because the idea for the bar and bartending service came up over mimosas, it was only fitting that a mimosa bar be added as an option for services. With the Toasts in Tow Trailer’s self serve spigot system, the ultimate mimosa bar can be added to any event of any size. But what juices should you include?
Throughout our travels and through our own testing, we have tasted some of the best (and worst) mimosa flavors of all time. Starting with the classic mimosa. Typically, mimosas are made with your choice of a dry champagne/sparkling wine and orange juice. One of our favorite ways to spice up a classic mimosa is to add pineapple juice. At our most recent event, this was definitely the most popular combination. Cranberry and grapefruit are also very popular options.
Another great way to mix it up with your mimosas is using fresh (or frozen) berries! We discovered this trick when recreating famous drink recipes from other countries during the Olympics this year. Here’s a Toasts in Tow original recipe (our spin off of an Italian Champagne Cocktail) for you to try at home:
- Start with your normal amount of preferred champagne or dry sparkling wine
- Instead of filling the rest of the glass with OJ, add half of your normal amount of OJ and 1 ounce of raspberry liqueur
- Throw in your favorite frozen (or fresh) berries
Pro tip: We love using frozen berries to help keep the drink cold. Our favorites are raspberries and blackberries.
Many of our mimosa ideas have come from finding some of the best brunch places while traveling. We’ve tried everything from a fruity pebbles mimosa to beer mimosa. We’ve enjoyed some of the best bottomless mimosas in New Orleans and drank some of the prettiest mimosas we’ve ever seen in Deep Ellum of Dallas. One of our favorite finds came from M Street in Nashville, Tennessee. M Street is located in the Gulch in Nashville and is known for housing 5 of its restaurants within a few feet of each other. This is where we found Saint Añejo. This popular Mexican restaurant had a beautiful brunch menu that included a Blood Orange Mimosa, as well, as a Pomelo Sparkle. The Pomelo Sparkle is a beautiful, grapefruit flavored drink that inspired us to start using grapefruit more in our own mimosa concoctions.
As we enter the heart of Fall and move into winter, we felt that it would only be right to test out a Fall themed mimosa. Leaving out the orange juice and replacing it with apple cider, we found that you can make the perfect Fall-Mosa! If you like to be “extra” like us, rim your glass with a sugar/cinnamon mix.
